From Portsmouth, he enrolled there and was commissioned Captain of Company D, 9th Virginia Infantry on 27 April 1861.

On the Campaign

He commanded the regiment as senior officer present at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and was briefly at Fort McHenry in Baltimore and Fort Delaware, then sent to the Federal prison on Johnson's Island, OH. He was transferred to Point Lookout, MD on 14 March 1865 for exchange and paroled in Richmond, VA on 27 April 1865.

His service from Benjamin H. Trask's 9th Virginia Infantry (1984) and his Compiled Service Records (CSRs),1 online from fold3; he's seen as Major in the Federal prison records, but that rank not seen in Confederate muster rolls. His gravesite is on Findagrave.
