Before Sharpsburg
His parents were living near Covington, Virginia at the time of his enrollment, he entered VMI on July 13, 1852. After graduation he was a Deputy Clerk of Court and manager of a cement works.
Entered service on April 22, 1861 at Covington as 1st Lieut., Company A, 27th Virginia Infantry; elected Captain August 1861; in late 1861 the company was converted to Artillery and was part of the famed Stonewall Brigade.
He was mortally wounded in the head in action at Cedar Mountain in August 1862.

Shown in some orders-of-battle in command at Sharpsburg, he was not present.
