Before Sharpsburg

A lawyer before the war, he was elected Captain of the Amherst Artillery in July 1861.

The rest of the War

He led his battery for most of the War, then was appointed Major to command the (Nelson's) Battalion in February 1865. After the surrender he was paroled at Lynchburg, Virginia, 22 May 1865.

After the War

He was again a practicing lawyer, and served in the Virginia Legislature. He was a trustee of his alma mater, soon to be renamed Washington & Lee University, from 1860 to 1898.
