He was 36 years old when he enrolled on 1 May 1861, at Brockets Bridge, to serve two years. He mustered in as Captain, Company K, 34th New York Infantry on 15 June 1861. Promoted to Major on 1 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded the Regiment early in the Campaign while Colonel Suiter was ill.

The rest of the War

Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel 22 January 1863, and mustered out with the regiment on 30 June 1863.
