Before Antietam
He was 20 years old when he enlisted in New York City as a Private in Company B of the 9th NY State Militia (83rd New York Infantry) on 30 November 1861. He was discharged on 16 June 1862 to accept the commission as 2nd Lieutenant, Company D, 42nd New York Infantry (to date from 19 February). He transferred to Company C on 20 June.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 27 October to date from 17 September 1862 but was discharged 6 January 1863 for disability. He was appointed 2nd Lieutenant in the 3rd Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps (VRC) but resigned on 20 November 1863.
After the War
He began receiving a Veteran's invalid pension in March 1870. He was a "newspaperman" by occupation.

His obit suggests he was a student at West Point before enlisting, but he's not found in the List of Cadets... (1917) published by the United States Military Academy.
His obituary also has his full name as Arthur Septimus Cobb, though all of his military records have him as Septimus Cobb.
