Age 18, he enlisted on 25 May 1861 on Long Island, NY, and mustered in as a Private in Company E, 42nd New York Infantry on 22 June.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in both thighs in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was absent, in hospital, to at least August 1863. He transferred to Company A, 12th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps in September or October 1863 and mustered out on 23 June 1864 in Washington, DC.
