Before Sharpsburg

He was a lawyer, was in the Georgia Secession Convention (Jan 1861), served in the Legislature and was mayor of Atlanta. He entered the Battalion as Captain, Company A on 1 August 1861, was promoted to Major on 18 July 1862, and Lt Colonel on Lt Colonel Lamar's death on 15 September 1862.

On the Campaign

He took command of the Battalion at Sharpsburg, and led it in combat at the Sunken Road on September 17th.

The rest of the War

He was wounded at Chancellorsville (May 1863), but returned to command the battalion at Gettysburg (July 1864).
