Age 40, he enlisted in New York City, and mustered as a Private in Company F, 42nd New York Infantry on 9 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the left shoulder in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was treated at the field hospital on the Susan Hoffman farm at Sharpsburg, but died of wounds on 7 October 1862.
