Age 28, he enlisted on 26 May 1861 on Long Island, NY, and mustered as a Private in Company I, 42nd New York Infantry on 22 June.

He was wounded in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was listed as a deserter on 17 June 1863, but returned to his unit and was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps by August 1863.
