Before Sharpsburg
He had experience in the French Artillery before the War. He enrolled as First Lieutenant, Company E, First Battalion Louisiana Zouaves on 9 April (or 31 August) 1861. That unit became DeGournay's Battery ("A", Orleans Independent), 12th Battalion Louisiana Heavy Artillery. He was appointed Major of Artillery, Provisional Army of the Cofederate States on 27 March 1862, and assigned as Chief of Artillery to General D.H. Hill.
On the Campaign
From General D.H. Hill's Report:
Major [J. W.] Ratchford, Major Pierson, chief of artillery, and Lieut. J. A. Reid, of my staff; were conspicuous for their gallantry.
The rest of the War
He was on Ordnance Department duty in Europe in 1863 and 1864 buying artillery. He was assigned to General E.K. Smith in Texas on 25 July 1864.
After the War
He was living in Louisiana to at least 1870.
