He enlisted at age 18 in New York City, and mustered in as Private, Company K, 59th New York Infantry on 18 October 1S61. He transferred to Company 0 in November or December 1861.

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He deserted later in Spetember 1862.
