An 1846 City directory for New York listed him as a coppersmith. He enlisted at age 45 on 27 September 1861 at Post Sackett, and mustered in as Private, Company I, 59th New York Infantry on 24 October.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action on 17 September 1862.

A member of "one of New York City's oldest families" which once owned Riker's Island. His son and namesake served from May 1861 - June 1864 in Company C, 84th NY Infantry (14th Brooklyn), and may also have been at Antietam.
