Before Sharpsburg

He mustered as a 2nd Lieutenant of the Virginia First Regiment of Foot in 1846 as it was organized for the Mexican War, but probably had no war service. By 1860 he was a lawyer at Chatham in Pittsylvania County, and was commissioned Captain of the Danville Artillery as they entered Confederate service on 22 April 1861. He was not reelected Captain in May 1862, but was commissioned Major of Artillery, CSA on 5 July 1862 and assigned to Taliafero's Division in August.

On the Campaign

He was Chief of Artillery for the Division in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was assigned to General Samuel G. French in November 1862 as Chief of Artillery, but was retired from service for health reasons by late 1863.

After the War

He was a lawyer, judge, newspaper editor, and architect in Danville, VA.
