He was of a prominent Georgia family: his grandfather was a Governor (1802-06), US Senator, founder of the University of Georgia, and namesake of Milledgeville, Ga.
He was elected 1st Lieutenant of Company C, 1st Regiment Georgia Regulars February 1, 1861. He resigned, having been elected Captain of Milledge's Battery Georgia Light Artillery on 21 May 1862 at the resignation of Captain Blodgett.

The rest of the War
He served for the whole War in command of the battery, lastly under General Early in the Valley (Va) District into 1865.
After the War
He lived in Atlanta, was State Librarian and a Militia Captain.
