Before Sharpsburg
He was from a prominent Virginia famly related to Thomas Jefferson and Peyton Randolph and was a carpenter and contractor before the war. He was commissioned Captain of the Orange Artillery on 22 March 1862 but was frequently absent from it, ill.
On the Campaign
He was with his battery in Maryland, but was probably not in practical command at Sharpsburg - relieved by First Lieutenant Fry.
The rest of the War
He was relieved in command of the battery on 4 October 1862 and resigned his commission 10 April 1863 because of poor health. He was on court martial duty to September 1863 and was paroled at Richmond, VA on 16 May 1865.
After the War
He again lived in Orange, VA.
