Before Antietam
From New Britain, he musteerd in as First Lieutenant, Company F, 14th Connecticut Infantry on 23 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was promoted to Captain on 17 September 1862 after Captain Blinn was killed.
The rest of the War
He led a battalion of 4 companies of the regiment in a dramatic assault on the Bliss Barn at Gettysburg. He was appointed Major on 22 September 1863 and Lieutenant Colonel on 11 October. He was wounded in action at Spottsylvania, VA on 12 May 1864 and at Farmville, VA on 6 April 1865. He was discharged 6 June 1865.
