Before Antietam
He was son of Henry Stanley, who founded the Stanley Rule and Level Company before 1854. After several years in business in New York on his own, Theodore worked in his father's firm, and was Secretary and Treasurer from 1856 until 1862. He mustered into service as 2nd Lieutenant, Company F, 14th Connecticut Infantry on 26 August 1862.
On the Campaign
He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
Mortally wounded in action - shot through the lungs - at Fredericksburg, VA on 13 December 1862. He died on 31 December 1862 at Armory Square Hospital, Washington DC.
