Before Sharpsburg
He was enrolled as First Lieutenant of the Long Island Battery on 15 March 1862. On the death of Captain Patrick Henry Clark in July 1862 he was promoted to Captain and took command of the battery.

He commanded the battery on the Campaign.
The rest of the War
His battery was disbanded in October 1862 and he was assigned to the Bureau of Conscription.
