Before Sharpsburg

He enrolled as First Lieutenant of the Wise Light Artillery, date not given. Captain Alburtis resigned on 25 January 1862 and Brown was elected Captain of the battery on 1 February. He was reelected in the reorganization of 26 April.

On the Campaign

He commanded the battery in Maryland. They were in action on the Otto Farm against elements of the Federal Ninth Corps in the afternoon of 17 September 1862, and he was wounded and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was paroled on 1 October 1862. His battery was disbanded by Special Order 197 of 4 October 1862 and his men were assigned to other units. He was sent to the post at Staunton, VA as Captain of Artillery, PACS, and served as Adjutant there. He resigned on 7 May 1864, then 50 years old, saying "[I] think I can do more service on the front than I can here." No later service found.
