Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 16 year old farm boy on his parents George White and Sarah Ann (Zachry) Smartt's large place near Fredonia in Chambers County, AL. He enlisted as a Private in Company C, 14th Alabama Infantry on 29 July 1861 in Fredonia.

On the Campaign

He was reported wounded and missing in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was still listed as missing to October 1863, with no later military record. Family genealogists have him as killed in the war in September 1862 (at least one says 14 September).
