Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 26 year old farmer at Liberty Hill in Dallas County, AL. He enlisted as a Private in Company G (renamed F), 5th Alabama Infantry on 10 April 1861 in Cahaba, AL.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was a prisoner at Fort Delaware until 2 October when he was sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange. He was declared exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and promoted to 3rd Corporal on 3 August 1863. He was wounded again, in May 1864 and furloughed home to at least October 1864. He was captured at Citronelle, AL on 4 May 1865 and paroled at Mobile, AL on 13 June 1865.
