Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 27 year old farmer living with Gideon & Martha Newsom (how related?) and 59 slaves on their plantation at Reynolds in Taylor County, GA. He enlisted on 27 May 1861 in Atlanta, GA and mustered as a Private in Company E, 6th Georgia Infantry. He was appointed First Corporal on 15 September 1861.
On the Campaign
Brigadier General Colquitt recognized him for gallantry in Maryland (as N.B. Neusan) and he was wounded and captured in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was paroled at the Hoffman farm field hospital on 1 October 1862. He transferred to Company G in May 1864 with no later military record.
After the War
He was a farmer and city marshall in Reynolds, Taylor County, GA.

Personal details from family genealogists and the US Census of 1860; his middle name is seen both with and without an 'e' at the end. His gravesite is on Findagrave.
He married Frances Taunton (1831-1879) and they had a daughter Sarah Elizabeth (1863-1944).
