References & notes

Basic information from Henderson's Confederate Soldiers of Georgia (1959) transcribed by Finchham1. They have him as W.R. Rowell. Thanks to descendant Rudy Rowell for his first name. William's brother John Jonas Rowell, also in Company E, was mortally wounded on South Mountain and died while a POW near Sharpsburg on 30 September. A third brother James Washington Rowell also served in Company E (1861-65), and may have been at Sharpsburg.
