Before Sharpsburg

He was described as a clerk, 6 feet tall, with fair complexion, hazel eyes, and dark hair when he enlisted as Sergeant in Company E, 7th Virginia Infantry on 20 June 1861 at Culpeper Courthouse. He had brief prior service in the Letcher Artillery. He was wounded at Blackburn's Ford on 18 July 1861, and placed on detached service as hospital steward.

On the Campaign

He was captured in action in September 1862 in Maryland.

The rest of the War

He was reduced to Private sometime during or before October 1862. Captured again at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and imprisoned at Ft. McHenry, Ft. Delaware, and Point Lookout. Exchanged on 13 February 1865 and paroled 8 May 1865.
