Before Sharpsburg

Age 21, he enlisted as Private, Company A, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 1 May 1861 at Fort Macon. He was appointed 5th Sergeant on 16 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the abdomen in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to 4th Sergeant on 1 October 1862. He was treated at a hospital in Richmond, VA and returned to duty after November 1862, but was killed in action on 7 May 1864 in the Wilderness, VA.
