Before Sharpsburg

Son of a wealthy Greensboro, NC merchant, he was a student at Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA (Class of 1864) at the start of the war. He returned home to enlist at Fort Macon, NC on 4 May 1861 and mustered as Private, Company B, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 20 June.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the arm in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 25 September and furloughed home.

He transferred as a Private to Company A of the 57th North Carolina Infantry on 16 February 1863 and was wounded and captured at Gettysburg, PA in July. He was in DeCamp General Hospital in New York Harbor by 24 July and was paroled there on 22 October 1863. He was admitted to a Richmond hospital on 28 October, and by April 1864 and to at least November 1864 he was in Greensboro, NC on detached service. He was retired to the Invalid Corps due to disability at Winder Hospital in Richmond on 15 November 1864 and sent back to Greensboro, where he was paroled on 5 May 1865.

After the War

He was in the mercantile business with his father and brother Victor in Greensboro, then in about 1870 built the McAdoo Hotel on South Elm Street there, which he operated to at least 1891. By 1900 he was banking and in real estate investment and development with his son William in Greensboro.

He married Josephine A. "Josie" Moore (1857-1919) in June 1875 and they had 2 children and may have adopted a third.
