Age 19, he enlisted in Greensboro, NC on 28 February 1862 and mustered as Private, Company B, 27th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in the leg and captured in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was listed as exchanged in November 1862, but did not return to his Company, being reported dead. I did not find any of the usual Federal records of his capture or exchange.
