Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 21 year old teacher living with his parents and 8 siblings on their modest farm at Greensboro in Guilford County, NC. He enlisted on 1 August 1861 at Fort Macon, NC and mustered as Private, Company B, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 20 June.

On the Campaign

He was wounded by a gunshot to his arm in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862, which broke the radius (forearm) bone.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 28 September and furloughed home on 3 October. He was discharged on 26 March 1863 for disability, but probably had later war service in local defense or other light duty units.

After the War

In 1870 he was a farmer in Guilford County but by 1880 was a physician and surgeon at Casa in Perry County, AR.
