In 1860 he was a 20 year old living with his parents and 8 siblings on their modest farm at Greensboro in Guilford County, NC. He enlisted on 4 May 1861 at Fort Macon, NC and mustered as Private, Company B, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 20 June.

On the Campaign

He was initially reported wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured, but later determined to have been killed there.
