Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a fairly wealthy 19 year old (orphan?) living with prosperous merchant R.M. Sloan and his family (and 7 slaves) at Greensboro in Guilford County, NC. He enlisted at Fort Macon, NC on 20 April 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 20 June.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and captured there.

The rest of the War

He was sent to Fort Delaware and sent to Aikens' Landing, VA for exchange on 2 October. He as formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was promoted to Corporal by June 1864 and was elected First Lieutenant on 3 December 1864. He was on a furlough from 23 February and was paroled at Greensboro, NC in April 1865.
