He was commissioned Captain of the North Carolina Guards on 17 April 1861; they later became Company C, 27th North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was present in command of Company C at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was appointed Major on 1 November and Lieutenant Colonel on 5 December 1862. He was wounded in action on 3 June 1864 at Cold Harbor, VA and promoted to Colonel to date from 11 January 1865.
