Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 20 year old living with his parents and 9 siblings on their modest farm at Greensboro in Guilford County, NC. He enlisted at Fort Macon, NC on 11 June 1861 and mustered as Private, Company B, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 20 June.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was wounded in the thigh and right arm at Bristoe Station, VA on 14 October 1863, and his right arm was amputated. He died of wounds in hospital in Richmond, VA on 9 November 1863.
