From Pitt County, he enlisted 19 April 1861 and was elected 2nd Lieutenant and Adjutant of the 27th North Carolina Infantry on 20 April. He was appointed Captain of Company E on 18 November.

On the Campaign

He was mortally wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds on 19 (or 18) September 1862 in camp with his Company, age 20.
