Elected 3rd Lieutenant on 16 May 1861, and 2nd Lieutenant on 20 August. Elected Captain of Company F, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 22 April 1862.

The rest of the War
Wounded in the abdomen and kidney at Bristoe Station, VA on 14 October 1863. Hospitalized at Richmond, VA where he died of wounds on 7 November 1863.
