Before Antietam
After graduation from West Point he served as an engineer. In November 1861 he was appointed Brig. Gen. of Volunteers, and commanded the 3rd Brigade in Burnside's North Carolina expedition. In July 1862 he was promoted Maj. Gen. of Volunteers.
On the Campaign
He was MGen Burnside's chief of staff in Maryland campaign and at Fredericksburg.
The rest of the War
He commanded the 9th Corps at Vicksburg and Jackson, Knoxville. He was again chief of staff to Burnside from Wilderness (1864) to Petersburg (1865); commanded the 9th Corps at Hatcher's Run, Ft Stedman, and on theAppomattox campaign.
After the War
He continued in Army service after the War as a surveyor and commandant of West Point. He retired in 1889.
