Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 19 year old student at Chapel Hill in Orange County, NC. He enlisted on 18 June 1861 at Fort Macon and mustered as a Private in Company G, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 31 August.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in the stomach in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg, and may have been captured there - he's listed on a parole of 27 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was furloughed home from a hospital in Staunton, VA on 8 October and he returned to his Company on 18 April 1863. He was again on furlough, sick, from 12 May 1863 to 2 February 1864, then detailed to the Quartermaster's Department in Hillsborough, NC to at least November 1864.
