Appointed First Lieutenant, Company K, 9th New York Infantry September 3, 1861; promoted Captain, November 23, 1861. He was provided with naval howitzers in late December 1861.

In command of the Company acting as an artillery battery in Maryland.
The rest of the War
Discharged September 30, 1862 by resignation. Was appointed Major of the reorganizing 9th Infantry in May 1863 (to October 1863), but not commissioned, as the units never completed organization.
After the War
He was President of the Hawkins' Zouaves Association by 1899.
