Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 24 year old farm worker on the Peter A Ray farm in Orange County, NC. He enlisted on 12 July 1861 at Fort Macon and mustered as a Private in Company G, 27th North Carolina Infantry. He was detailed to the Ordnance Department from August to at least November 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the head in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to CS Army General Hospital #25 in Richmond, VA on 3 October and furloughed home on He returned to his Company on 25 November 1862 but was sent back to the hospital on 20 December and died of typhoid fever at the hospital at Camp Winder in Richmond on 3 January 1863. His father filed a claim for his final pay of $23.10 in June 1863.
