Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 17 year old on his parents' farm at Chapel Hill in Orange County, NC. He enlisted on 3 March 1862 at age 20 in Hillsborough, NC and mustered as a Private in Company G, 27th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the arm in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.

The rest of the War

He returned to his Company on 4 March 1863. He was wounded again, at Bristoe Station, VA on 14 October 1863 and furloughed to 31 January 1864. He was very ill in hospitals in Richmond and Farmville, VA hospital from April to July 1864, then furloughed for 60 days. He was captured on 4 April 1865 at Sutherland's Station, VA. He was held at Point Lookout, MD until taking the Oath of Allegiance on 21 June 1865.

After the War

By 1880 he was a farmer at Hillsborough, NC. In 1910 he was a farm laborer on the James Walden place in Williamson County, TX and by 1920 had retired and boarded with the Waldens.
