Before Sharpsburg

In 1860 he was a 19 year old on his parents' farm at Hillsborough, NC. He enlisted there on 4 May 1862 and mustered as a Private in the Orange Guards - Company G, 27th North Carolina Infantry.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the shoulder or side in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

After the War

In 1870 he was a farmer and miller at Hillsborough, NC, probably on his father's place next door. By 1880 and to at least 1910 he worked his own farm there.
