He enlisted at age 20 in Company F, 1st North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862 at Sharpsburg.
The rest of the War
He was detailed on 8 April 1863 to a hospital as a nurse. He was captured in action 6 April 1865 at Dinwiddie Court House, VA and held at Point Lookout, MD until he was released on taking the Oath of Allegiance on 21 June 1865.
