Before Sharpsburg

From Wayne County, he enlisted as Private, Company K, 27th North Carolina Infantry on 10 June 1861. He was commissioned 3rd Lieutenant on 22 April 1862, and 2nd Lieutenant on 18 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded Company K at Sharpsburg and was wounded in the thigh in action there on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 30 August 1864.
