Before Antietam
His family moved from Ohio to Iowa to St Paul by 1850. In 1856 they began farming at Leon in Goodhue County. He enrolled at Hamline in 1859, and was still a student when he enlisted in Company F, 1st Minnesota Infantry on 22 May 1861. He was promoted to Corporal on 22 May 1862, on the Penninsular campaign.
On the Campaign
He was killed in action at Antietam on 17 September 1862.
