Before Antietam

From Fox Lake, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Company A, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 27 April 1861. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 30 August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He had his right arm amputated as a result of his Antietam wound. He was appointed Captain in the Veteran Reserve Corps on 27 October 1863, and didn't muster out until 1 January 1868.
