John Henry Thompson

Before Sharpsburg

Age 37, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Portsmouth Light Artillery on 20 April 1861 in Portsmouth. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 1 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He probably led the battery while Captain Cary F. Grimes directed the Battalion at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862. He formally relieved Captain Grimes in command when the Captain was mortally wounded and carried from the field there.

The rest of the War

He was promoted Captain to date from 17 September, but his battery was disbanded on 15 October 1862. He was assigned to the camp for paroled prisoners at Petersburg, VA in November 1862 and was detailed to General Winder's staff in May - July 1864.
