From Cooktown, he enlisted in Company D, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 1 May 1861. He was captured in action at Gainesville, VA in August 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Wounded again in action at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863. Transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps in March 1864.
