Before Antietam

From Racine, he enlisted in Company F, 2nd Wisconsin Infantry on 23 April 1861 and was appointed 2nd Lieutenant on 24 April. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 8 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Wounded again, in action at Gettysburg, PA in July 1863. Promoted to Major of the Regiment on 13 August 1863.
