Before Antietam

From Aurora, IL, he enlisted in Company B, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 10 May 1861. Promoted to Sergeant and First Sergeant, then Sergeant Major of the Regiment on 31 October 1861. Appointed 2nd Lieutenant of Company B on 16 January 1862, and First Lieutenant on 28 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant on 1 August 1863.
