From Grand Rapids, MI, he enlisted in Company C, 6th Wisconsin Infantry on 28 June 1861. He was promoted to Corporal and Sergeant.

He was wounded in action on 17 September 1862.

Wounded in action again on 5 February 1865 (probably at Hatcher's Run, VA).
