Before Antietam

Enlisted 16 June 1861 in Company E, 12th Ohio Infantry.

On the Campaign

A Corporal in Company E, he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in capturing a Confederate Captain and 4 men on South Mountain on 14 September.

The rest of the War

He served his 3-year term in the 12th, then re-enlisted and served in the 23rd Ohio veteran volunteer infantry. By the end of the War he had been promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, and mustered out 7 August 1865.
